Vogue 8581 + New Look 6969 = Anniversary Outfit

Aloha everyone!  Our celebration of 18 years of marriage was perfect.  We enjoyed a delicious dinner in Paia at an open air restaurant, and I wore a new outfit.  Yes, I finished it in time!  I had several ideas for the unique orange and blue fabric, but in the end I used New Look 6969 to create a skirt and Vogue 8581 for a top.  The blouse pattern suggests a two-way knit, but I used a coral-colored, cotton, crepe-like, nearly sheer, woven and it worked out just fine.  I absolutely love how billowy the sleeves are on this pattern.  As you know, for the skirt, I used an interesting wavy print in a faille-like satin, which I underlined in Kona cotton to give it a bit more structure.  I am very happy with the fit of both pieces.
I made View C for the blouse, and I cut out a size 10 and made one alteration.  I increased the size of the neckband by 1.5".  I also used french seams for most of the construction, since the fabric is very lightweight.  This is an easy pattern as the description says, but it does have a lot of gathering, which is time consuming.  I made View D on the skirt and also cut out a size 10, but I added about 1" to the waistband.  This is the first skirt pattern I have come across that actually has instructions for an invisible zipper.  Wouldn't you know it, I inserted a lapped zipper with two snaps at the top because I happened to have these things in matching colors in my stash.  I made one design change and that was to stitch down the front inverted pleat by about 5" on each side.  If I had not taken this step the front would have pouched out in an unflattering way.  I like the front panel a lot better when it lies flat.  In fact, this skirt feels great on, because it hugs my waist perfectly.

Here is a close-up of the skirt front:
Overall I am happy with how the outfit came together.  I think I like the soft billowy top with the architectural like skirt.  What do you think?  I have some knits that will also match the skirt, and I plan to make at least one knit top to wear with this skirt.  I think a knit top will make it less dressy, which would be good for everyday wear.  Anyway, thanks again for all the input on the fabric.  Hope you have all had a beautiful weekend and are looking forward to a trouble free week.  Aloha!

I love the outfit and congrats on your anniversary. Is that your neatly organized fabric stash you're standing in front of? To die for.

Both are great. I really love the skirt. It would look very smart with a crisp white shirt. Almost nautical, but with orange rather than red, making it more current. Really nice!

Congratulations on you anniversary. They come around fast. I love the constrasting billowing top and angular skirt print and style. I would have sewn down the pleats on the skitr too. Have a good week too.

Wow, it looks terrific. The skirt length is really flattering on you.
I like the contrasting styles, like you mentioned, and think the skirt would look super with blue or white tops.

Glad you had a great anniversary! The skirt looks great, and as others have said, it makes the most of the fabric's design.

Ohh very nice. Congratulations on your anniversary too.
I have a Burda skirt pattern like that and a vintage blouse pattern similar and I was thinking of the skirt the other day ... may put this on my list!

Congratulations on your anniversary! The full suit is great, however, it is true that this skirt is too precious to limit it, several tops in different colors used will compliment skirt and the skirt is very versatile.
I'm dying of envy for your stash!!

Great outfit and happy anniversary to you and your hubby! I am wanting to make another view of that skirt pattern, the one with wrap/drapped front. But I want to use a silk and need to make a muslin... Which is why it is still unmade. :)

Nice!

I like the combination of billowy and sheer with the high waisted skirt. And I like how the darker part of the pattern wraps around the middle of the skirt - I think the placement is very nice. The skirt is an interesting pattern!

I detest miles of gathering! good for you.

Your celebration sounds really lovely!

Love the organization of your fabric. Mine is in rubbermaid bins. I keep thinking when i reduce the stash to a more manageable size I will like my sewing space much better. It seems cluttered. Yours is so well organized.

I really love the skirt fabric!

Sort of unrelated question-
it looks like you're standing in front of your fabric storage. Can you talk more about how is it organized? Color? type of fabric, size?
I'm currently working hard on organizing my new sewing room.

You look stunning in this outfit. I love the fabric you used for the skirt. It's a real eye-catcher. Is that your fabric stash your standing in front of? If so, holy shamoly!

18 years - congratulations!

You definitely have an eye for colour coordination. That's one thing I love about your fabric matching.

I LOVE the skirt. If I had made something that stylish, I'd be wearing it every day! It will go really well with the knit tops.

I'm in love with our fabric storage - wow, so neat and organised. I'd love shelves like that - eventually! ( just need several kids to leave home before I can lay claim to a bedroom)

Happy Anniversary! I will be celebrating my 18th wedding anniversary this July too! You did a fabulous job as always! I love the pleated detail on the skirt and that you are so good at fixing potential problems and that orange to would also look fab with jeans. I hope you will come by my blog Saturday and post this project at my sewing linky party!

Mushy, I very rarely comment on individual blogs, but I just love your outfit. I think it's the best thing I've seen in your wardrobe! And you can wear orange!! When I wear it, I look like I died and nobody told me. Congrats on 18 years too!

I love it when you make bright and colourful outfits! I love the print of the skirt, and I absolutely love the pleats on the skirt. I also like how you paired a billowy, gathered top with a slim, structured, pleated skirt. Very edgy!
