A Year in Review - Wow!

I can't believe it's already been a year since I launched writing "MushyWear" and began sewing in earnest to keep it interesting and develop relationships, offer inspiration, use up my stash, try new patterns, and have fun with fashion and style.  Yes, today is my one year blogoversary.  Thank you for joining me on this journey.  I cannot tell you enough how fun this has been for me, and how much I appreciate getting to know so many of you through your blogs and comments.

I'd like to celebrate with a give-away, but before I get to that, I thought it would be interesting to go back and compile a short list of statistics from the past year.  I had quite the fabric stash and I am happy to say I used a lot of it.  I may have gone overboard!   In each category I counted individual sewing items as one.  For instance, with pj's the top is one and the bottom is one.   No matter how big or small the project, I counted everything up from the past year.

The Stats:

Home Dec 8
Kids Items 15
Sewing for Others19
Workout Clothes 2
Jackets 2
PJ's 6
Pants 12
Dress 16
Skirts 41
Tops 49

That's 170 items.  Whoa!  I'm not sure I'll keep the same pace this next year.  However, another big reason I sew is because it's my creative outlet.  I LOVE to put outfits together and I like to experiment with fabric, textures and colors.  I feel like an artist when I am creating, and I still have so many ideas bubbling and boiling in my head.  As time permits, I hope to keep creating!

My favorite item that I made, that wasn't for me, was this outfit for baby I.

And my favorite outfit I made for me was this:

My least favorite outfit was this.  Oh dear, "What was I thinking?"  I do still have the top, which I like and will try to work into another outfit, but the dress ended up being too big for my liking.

I was surprised that I didn't make one pair of shorts.  Especially living here, and I do occasionally wear them.  I should definitely make some shorts this year and a bathing suit or two.  I could use both items.  I also want to make more workout clothes since I wear the set I made quite a bit.  In addition, I'd like to take on some more difficult projects and learn some techniques I'm not familiar with.  Of course, there is always room to learn more about fit!  I tend to shy away from patterns that require too much thought on my part about how to get the fit just right.

To celebrate and to thank you for reading and participating, I am giving away a "Color Explosion" market/day bag, a Maui beach towel, a package of dry roasted macadamias, an aloha mini note tablet, and Kwik Sew 3614 to inspire the lucky winner to try a pair of shorts with me this year!  If you'd like to be entered in the drawing, which will take place on February 14th with the goodies being mailed on the 15th, please leave a comment with your email written like this: upcountrymom"at"yahoo"dot"com.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on what you like about the blog, what you think could be improved, what you'd like to see related to a specific pattern, fabric, or style, or simply that you'd like to be entered into the drawing and you don't want to have to think about anything.  Ha ha, sometimes I feel like this.  I just want to enjoy the pictures and not have to think.  Anyway, thanks again for making it a richer year.  You are treasured!  Have an awesome week.
For one lucky reader!

Happy Blogiversary! (I need to get back to my blog!) I am truly inspired by you! You're outfits are beautiful and often times I've bought the patterns after seeing your finished garment. I also like that you share so much information about the garments; fabric, alterations, likes and dislikes.

I'm glad I discovered your blog a while ago. You have a style that I really like and want to sew myself.

It's fun to read what you made last year. I think I'm going to keep track myself this year and see how I did. Plus, I really liked that you posted your favorite and least fav outfit from last year.

Congratulations! You can enter me in the giveaway. thesewingspot"at"gmail"dot"com

I think you do a lovely job with your blog. I like to learn about different places so I guess I would find it interesting if you included more about your life in the islands and how it differs from the mainland. You've done some of that and it's been interesting!

Love the colors you've chosen for the giveaway. My blog anniversary is soon, too, so I will have to put my thinking cap on!

Love your blog - I have been following you most of this year. Have a lot of the same taste in clothes and fabric as you - I especially like Hawaiian prints - you inspired me to attempt my first knit - the jalie running skirt - I just started it and hope to put it on my new blog - which I set up but haven't blogged on as of yet!!! Soon. Sew5280@gmail.com

I just love seeing the fabulous new outfits you have made! 170 items are a lot, but I'm not surprised. You have new stuff all the time. Not just new stuff, but beautifully awesome stuff.

Congratulations on hitting the 1 year mark. I love reading your blog because it's my "pseudo-vacation" whenever I get your posts in my google reader. I live in the frozen north of Canada. It revs up my imagination to see your tropical outfits all the time.... I guess you could say I am living the warm-life vicariously through you. Keep up the fantastic sewing!

Happy blogiversary! I enjoy seeing all the great clothes you make. I agree with your favourite skirt of the year, it is perfect: great fit, style and fabric.

Hi Elizabeth001au. When my boys were that little I could not have sewn like I do now. My boys are 11, 8 and 7. They are self directed in the afternoons when we finish school so I have a good 2 - 4 hours to sew everyday if I want to, even with a break for sports activities. Hang in there. Your time will come too and those infant years are so precious and fleeting!

Congratulations! A lot of sewing has happened. I enjoy your blog very much. Love to see your outfits, which gets me thinking along the lines of actually making things that go together.

The most amazing thing about your blog is the sheer number of pretty things you make, then photograph lushly to inspire everybody else. I love that you always share the pattern number (and I confess that I've immediately snagged some of the ones you made on eBay and tucked them away for future use). Also love the fabric porn pics of materials you're considering using! Droolworthy!

One blog feature I truly appreciate is that you are one of the few bloggers to list other blogs according to who has been doing something most recently. Because some just list the blogs they read, you can't tell from the list who has new stuff they're proudly showing off or new techniques they are generously sharing. I always start at your blog and then zoom around to the others to see their creations. Thank you so much for including this feature.

Congrats on a great year! Your blog is so inspiring, and I always love to see what you are sewing! Even your least favorite outfit is adorable to me!!

Please enter me in the giveaway. My email is "v.burks"at"lycos" dot com (hope I did that right).

As far as the blog is concerned, I love how productive you are! I would love to see more challenges like the one you did where you made a garment out of a "what were you thinking" fabric. It turned out really nice!

I never got a chance to say how much I loved the back on your last top before you updated - but I love how it looks so conservative from the front but the back is so daring!

Congratulations on your blogaversary - I love how you look so fresh and youthful and yet we are nearly the same age!

I won't enter the giveaway because the postage will cost a bomb should you be unluckly enough for me to win it, but all the best for another productive creative year!

Congrats on a fabulous year of blogging! I can't believe you made so many things, that's awesome! My favourite part has been watching you sew outfits, how you think about the whole look and what will work together! It's inspiring because I tend to make one crazy piece - and never a well-planned outfit! I love seeing all of your summery looks and reading about life in Hawaii, it's like going on a virtual vacation!
Now you have me craving some chocolate-covered macadamia nuts - yum! I won't enter the giveaway because I already have a hot-pink towel from Hawaii. Hey, it's my blogoversary this week, too! Congrats again and keep up the fantastic work! :)

Congrats on your blogiversary and for making so many inspiring garments.

I'm having a slight Twilight Zone moment about your giveaway, as not an hour ago I mentioned to a friend that I'm going to try my hand at making shorts this year.

Great minds......

Wow, congrats for so many things. First of all, your beautiful, inspirational and educational blog. I love following your thoughts on a project and how you combine fabrics and patterns to come up with lovely garments and outfits. I also enjoy learning about life on a daily basis in Hawaii. And congrats on such a productive sewing year. You are a wonderfully positive role model for making sure that we can fit sewing into a loving, healthy life, no excuses. I won't enter the giveaway since I already live a semi-tropical life, but I will join these other fans and sewing friends in sending you best wishes for more fun blog years ahead.

Congrats for making your blog dreams come true! I really commend you for all the work you have done, not just sewing, but writing and taking photos as well. I've tried blogging before and it can be quite time consuming.

I stumbled across your blog this summer and have been reading it ever since. Your finished products are always great. I love your sense of style. It's inspirational. One suggestion I have for the direction of your blog would be to include a few "how to" posts. I don't recall reading those in the past. Maybe that's not something you're interested in doing. But if you did, I know I for one would appreciate it. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate. I am a beginning seamstress and I appreciate when someone shows me how to do something simple but in a new, efficient, quality way. Just a thought.

Happy Anniversary!
I have enjoyed reading your blog and will continue to do so. I really like how you make "outfits" and it is very refreshing to look at warm weather designs when I'm surrounded by snow.

Caroline said...

aaaah! I've been seriously wanting that exact quick sew pattern to make some shorts. !! The macadamia nuts are making me laugh because when my dad worked on Johnston island and flew through Hawaii every two months he would always bring me cans of nuts ... mmmm, sweet memories of that season of life. :)

I am going to be following with interest your workout wear and bathing suit efforts because this is an area I would really like to make some progress in myself. I am getting ready to trace off the Jalie running skirt pattern and will probably get to it after a couple of other things that need to be sewn first. I'll probably ask you a bunch of questions then.

I'd love to learn more about fitting too, probably why I've stayed away from pants and shorts .... tops usually fit me just right the way they are made. usually.

I really love your blog. I wish I was that productive. But I'm not, and that's okay for this season of life.

Congratulations! What I love about your blog is not just the many beautiful garments you sew, but your upbeat attitude and the fun you have with your hobby that really shines through in your posts. Don't worry if you produce less (your closet must be quite full by now); it's quality not quantity your readers care about! I'd love some souvenirs from Maui: little"dot"el"at"gmx"dot"net!

Congratulations on reaching your first year of blogging! I've loved reading your blog, very inspiring and lovely clothes you make and it's interesting to read the snippets about where you live/happenings and occasionally see photos from there too. I don't think you need to change anything in my opinion, I always enjoy reading your blog. No need to enter me in your give-away, if I was lucky enough to be chosen posting overseas is horrendously expensive.
I love the baby outfit too!

I found your blog through other blogs late last year and it's now on my lookylist. You create inspiration by buying and coordinating fabrics so well. I like your outfits. I rarely sew items exactly as patterned and I admire that in your work as well. I appreciate the time it takes to write down what one did to make the project flow as so many of those "A-HA" moments happen on the fly. And sewing for other people -- Keep it up.

Thank you also for your good wishes about my ab muscle! It's not a hernia! yeah!
I really like your least favorite outfit! :) Do you want to send the jumper you don't like to me? ;)
I'd love to win the bag you made!
